LIGHT & BUILDING FAIR IN FRANKFURT: Gaining greater recognition and visibility for the country
AS the saying goes, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic and I experienced something of that magical moments at i-City in Shah Alam recently.
I was transported back in time to 50 years ago when, as a child, different colours of lights never failed to ignite my spirits. The mesmerising nightscape of i-City created by millions of light-emitting diode (LED) lights brought back the child in me. It is not so much about the technology itself, but how it touches every aspect of human existence.

During the networking event, Malaysia was represented by seven companies with high export potential under our Green SSL/LED Programme, aimed at grooming world-class companies, and they were Avialite Sdn Bhd, ECO Tech Sdn Bhd, Primelux Energy Sdn Bhd, Extra-Built (M) Sdn Bhd, Han JDQ Sdn Bhd, LED Vision Sdn Bhd and P-Plus Sdn Bhd.

At Frankfurt, reality met technological myth.
I was transported into an entirely different world where LEDs are in many diverse applications — aviation lighting, automotive headlamps, advertising, traffic signals, camera flashes and even household products.

Be LED by your Magical Dreams

Specific Project Mission (SPM) to Frankfurt, Germany to expedite the commercialisation and internationalisation of Malaysia’s Green SSL/LED industry

The modern world that is shaped by technology and innovation is a world where LEDs are now used in diverse applications for aviation lighting, automotive headlamps, advertising, general lighting, traffic signals, camera flashes and even household purposes. The LED industry has long established its proven advantages to include - lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved physical robustness, smaller size, and faster switching, amid others. It is but evident that Malaysia recognises what this industry can offer to our people and our economy.

According to a recent McKinsey’s report, the global market model indicates revenues of around EUR 100 billion for the global market in 2020. The total market is expected to grow annually by 5% through to 2016 and by 3% thereafter until 2020. The commercial and industrial LED lighting is a major business opportunity with a projected growth of 40% per year through 2016. Though Malaysia has had a slow and steady foray in the LED industry since 1970s, today I am beaming with pride to even acknowledge that we are an emerging exporter of LED modules in the region.

In 2013, sales performance from LED/ SSL participating companies has tremendously increased by 30.7% from RM27 million in 2012 to RM36 million. Meanwhile, investments by LED/SSL companies in Malaysia have also increased by 30.5% from RM11 million to RM15 million. This year, the Government is looking at sales revenue for up to RM80 million to be generated by the consortium of Malaysian LED Lighting Manufacturers that was initially formed with 10 home grown companies to help Malaysia demonstrate its capability and leadership in this industry. In keeping with its aspiration to create and grow a minimum of five world-class home-grown SSL/LED companies by 2020, Malaysia through SME Corp.

With the aim of gaining some traction and visibility for the country, the Government, spearheaded by SME Corp. Malaysia, recently organised the Specific Project Mission (SPM) to Frankfurt, Germany, in conjunction with the Light+Building Fair 2014. The SPM also included a networking event with Malaysian LED/SSL companies on 31 March 2014, aimed to introduce Malaysia’s leading LED/SSL companies to the global market, for greater recognition and to tap global business opportunities. The event had received an encouraging response, with participation from more than 16 foreign companies and organisations. Malaysia was represented by seven companies with high export potential under our Green SSL/LED Programme. Amongst them were Avialite Sdn. Bhd.; ECO Tech Sdn. Bhd.; Primelux Energy Sdn. Bhd.; Extra-Built (M) Sdn. Bhd.; Han JDQ Sdn. Bhd.; LED Vision Sdn. Bhd.; and P-Plus Sdn. Bhd.

PPlus Lighting, Han JDQ and ECO-Tech are three home-grown LED companies that have evolved from their SME status to globally competent players in the past 5 years.

Without mass production, without more SMEs coming forward to venture into this attractive and high-yielding LED/ SSL industry, Malaysia may not go far.

LED/SSL Programme

To push Malaysia into being at the forefront of this inevitable technology, the Government has set into motion the EPP 10 Programme under the Electric & Electrical NKEA that will assist SSL/LED companies. SME Corp has engaged ISIS Innovation Limited, a commercialisation unit under the University of Oxford, to spur the creation of world-class Malaysian LED/SSL companies under a three-phase programme. The first phase, which commenced in 2013, involves 10 companies and will focus on developing their business strategies to strengthen their abilities and broaden market reach. AVIALITE chosen to be one the companies under SMECorp LED/SSL Programme Phase I in 2013 and Phase II in 2014. - See more at: http://etp.pemandu.gov.my/Electrical-%e2%97%98-Electronics-@-Electrical-%e2%97%98-Electronics-EPP10-;CreatingLocalSolidStateLighting_Champions.aspx#sthash.zW43u4lY.dpuf
